Volunteers are integral to our organisation

Hello everyone, How time flies – I have now been in post for 5 weeks. I was sorry to miss the residential in September but I am getting to grips with the project and have met with Esther Nimmo, Training Lead for the North, who has fully explained the training. I have settled well into my new office and have been busy promoting the My Life My Decision project to colleagues and other organisations. I have already received 13 referrals from Age UK Lancashire staff following the commencement of the mapping exercise. Age UK Lancashire works throughout a large part of Lancashire – a massive task. Volunteers are integral to our work – as a registered charity, we could not support the number of older people we do or hold activities/social groups without their help and support. The My Life My Decision Project is no different. I would therefore like to introduce to you my very first volunteer for the project. David is a recently retired Chemistry Teacher and Deputy Head Teacher of 38 years, from a school in Burnley in the East of the county. David was looking for a volunteering role which would use his skills and experience and which he would find interesting and challenging. David is married to Maureen, a support worker for Age UK Lancashire. He has 2 sons and 2 grandchildren. He is a supporter of Burnley Football Club (like me – we have lots of conversations about their progress or not!!) and enjoys playing golf. David has already received some training on the Mental Capacity Act, Advance Decisions for Refusal of Treatment and Lasting Power of Attorney for Health & Welfare. He is now looking forward to commencing his role.
I am really looking forward to gaining the experience and knowledge needed so that I can support older people complete Advance Decisions and to help Heather promote the project in East Lancashire. I am also interested in being involved with the Compassion in Dying Steering Group and attending the meetings to help shape the future.
I am delighted that David has applied to be a volunteer for the project. I am certain that his skills in communication and experience in teaching will be indispensable. Welcome David!!
