Peer Navigator

We want people to feel supported at the end of life. This will mean something different to everyone, but at Compassion in Dying we believe people should have honest information so they can make informed decisions, and get support to plan their treatment and care to ensure that what happens reflects their needs and preferences.

The people we support tell us that this can often be hard to achieve, which is why Compassion in Dying is looking for a dedicated and motivated Peer Navigator who can use their personal experience to support others over the phone, by letter and email. This is a new service which excitingly brings together the approaches of peer support and care navigation. The post holder will use their knowledge and experience to deliver practical and emotional support to help people make sense of their situation, make the best decisions for them as an individual, and plan for the future.

We are looking for someone who has personal experience of living with a long term or terminal illness and of having to make complex decisions about treatment and care.

Compassion in Dying specialises in providing information on advance care planning, shared decision-making and people’s rights under the Mental Capacity Act and our nurse-led information line supports 5,000 people a year.

We consistently hear from the people we support about the need to speak to “someone who has been through it themselves” because “nothing beats talking through a problem with someone that understands what you’re going through” (research participant, 2018).

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the expansion of a well-established information and support service.

Role Profile

Role title: Peer Navigator
Reporting to: Information Strategy and Development Manager
Hours: 28 hours per week over 4 days
Length of contract: 3 year, fixed term contract (subject to 6 month probationary period)
Salary: £26,974 – £31,470 pro rata based on skills, knowledge & experience
Main Place of work: 181 Oxford Street (3rd Floor), London, W1D 2JT.
The building has a small lift which is only accessible from the 1st floor landing.

Role purpose

The support offered by our Peer Navigator will complement the practical information we already provide on planning for the end of life by:

  • providing an opportunity for people to discuss their worries, hopes and frustrations with someone who has been through a similar experience
  • giving practical support on how to get the information they need to be able to make decisions about treatment and care
  • helping them to navigate and access local support
  • supporting them to plan their treatment and care in advance, helping them achieve the end of life and death that’s right for them, and/or
  • supporting people who are caring for someone else at the end of life
